Instagram Lets Creators Boost Livestreams Directly From the App

Instagram is giving creators another way to get more people into their live broadcasts.

The platform has introduced an option to boost Instagram livestreams directly from the app, allowing creators to put paid promotion behind a live broadcast. The feature gives creators a simpler route to promote their streams without having to build a separate campaign through Meta Ads Manager.

It is a relatively small product update, but it addresses one of the biggest challenges with livestreaming: timing. A regular Instagram post can continue collecting views long after it is published. A livestream has a much smaller window. Once the broadcast ends, the opportunity to join it in real time is gone.

Instagram Adds a Boost Option for Livestreams

The new Instagram livestream boost option brings paid promotion into the livestream setup itself. Instead of relying entirely on followers or Instagram’s organic recommendations to bring viewers into a broadcast, creators can now spend money to extend the reach of their live content.

When a livestream is boosted, Instagram can promote it across areas of the platform including Feed, Stories and Reels. That gives the broadcast exposure beyond the creator’s existing follower base and potentially puts the live session in front of people who would not normally encounter the account.

The feature builds on advertising capabilities that already existed within Meta’s ecosystem. The main change is the simpler workflow for creators who want to promote a live session without setting up a more complicated advertising campaign.

Creators Can Promote a Livestream Before It Starts

The timing of the new feature is particularly important because creators can prepare the promotion before their livestream begins. Instagram allows creators to set up the boost ahead of the scheduled broadcast instead of waiting until they are already live.

Instagram recommends setting up the promotion at least two hours before the livestream to help avoid potential delays in ad delivery. Creators can also select when the promotion should run, giving them more control over how their advertising budget is used around the live event.

That could be useful for planned broadcasts such as interviews, product launches, creator Q&As, shopping sessions and special announcements. In those cases, the creator already knows when the audience needs to show up.

Instagram Brings Paid Reach Closer to Creators

For many creators, the biggest change is not the advertising capability itself. It is where the feature now sits.

Meta Ads Manager provides considerably more advertising controls, but it can also feel like a separate tool from the everyday Instagram experience. Creators who simply want to put some money behind an upcoming Live session may not want to build a full advertising campaign.

Instagram’s in-app boost option removes some of that friction. The creator can prepare the livestream, choose the boost option and configure the promotion without leaving the platform.

That follows a broader direction across Instagram, where more creator tools are being built directly into the app. The company wants creators to publish, reach audiences and manage their content without constantly moving between different Meta products.

The Update Could Help Creators Fill Live Audiences

Livestreaming depends heavily on having viewers at the same time. A creator can have a large following and still struggle to get enough people into a broadcast when it starts.

Paid distribution gives creators another way to address that problem. Instead of waiting for followers to notice a Live notification or happen across the broadcast, creators can actively put the session in front of a wider audience.

That could be particularly useful for creators with something specific to promote. A product demonstration, sponsored event or live shopping session becomes more valuable when viewers are actually present and participating rather than discovering the content after the moment has passed.

Live Shopping and Commercial Content Could Benefit

The feature also has an obvious connection to creator commerce. Brands and creators increasingly use livestreams to demonstrate products, answer questions and interact with potential customers in real time.

For those broadcasts, audience size is only part of the equation. Timing matters just as much. A person who watches a replay may still be interested in a product, but they are no longer participating in the live conversation.

Boosting a livestream gives creators a way to spend advertising money specifically around that live window. It does not guarantee engagement or sales, but it gives the creator more control over how many people are given the opportunity to join.

Instagram Livestream Boost Builds on Existing Meta Advertising Tools

The ability to promote livestream content is not entirely new to Meta. Advertisers have already been able to use Meta’s advertising infrastructure to promote Instagram Live content.

The difference is the more direct creator-focused workflow now being introduced inside Instagram. Instead of treating the livestream and advertising campaign as separate activities, Instagram is bringing the promotion option closer to the place where creators actually produce the broadcast.

That makes the feature less about introducing a completely new advertising format and more about making an existing capability easier to access.

How to Boost an Instagram Livestream

The new option is designed to fit into the existing livestream setup rather than requiring creators to learn a completely separate advertising process. Creators preparing a Live broadcast can access the boost option and configure the promotion before the session begins.

Creators can select an audience, set the promotion schedule and prepare the livestream as usual. Instagram then handles the paid distribution while the creator focuses on the broadcast itself.

Instagram recommends preparing the boost at least two hours before going live. That gives the promotion time to move through the advertising process before the broadcast begins.

Instagram Gives Creators Another Way to Buy Reach

Instagram’s livestream boost is ultimately about giving creators another distribution option.

Organic reach remains important, but it is unpredictable. A creator planning an important livestream may not want to rely entirely on followers seeing a notification or Instagram recommending the broadcast at the right moment.

Paid promotion gives creators another lever to pull.

For major livestreams, that could mean putting advertising behind a broadcast several hours before it begins and continuing promotion while the session is live. For smaller creators, the appeal may simply be convenience: the ability to promote a Live without leaving Instagram and opening a separate advertising workflow.

The feature does not change what makes a livestream successful. The content still needs to give people a reason to stay, interact and come back. What it changes is the creator’s ability to get that broadcast in front of more people while it is happening.
