Reddit is pushing its automated advertising strategy further by opening its AI-powered Max campaigns to all advertisers. The campaign format had previously been available through a more limited rollout. However, Reddit is now making the system broadly accessible as it looks to attract more performance-focused ad spending.
Max campaigns are designed to automate several parts of the advertising process, including targeting, placements, creative selection, bidding and budget distribution. Reddit is also adding API support and a Smartly integration. Additionally, it is introducing asset groups, giving advertisers more flexibility in how they build and manage campaigns.
The bigger idea is straightforward. Reddit wants advertisers to spend less time manually adjusting campaigns. Meanwhile, its AI handles more of the optimization in the background.
Reddit Max Campaigns Move Beyond Beta
Reddit first introduced Max campaigns as a limited beta, giving selected advertisers an early opportunity to test its automated campaign system. The platform uses AI and signals from Reddit Community Intelligence to evaluate potential impressions. It determines where ads are more likely to generate traffic, conversions or other desired actions.
With the wider rollout, advertisers no longer need to be part of a restricted testing group to access the format. Max campaigns can automatically adjust audience targeting, placements, creative combinations, bidding and budget allocation throughout a campaign. As a result, that reduces the amount of manual intervention required from marketers. This is particularly helpful when campaigns are running across multiple audiences or creative assets.
Reddit is positioning the format as a performance tool rather than simply another AI feature. Advertisers can still monitor results and make strategic decisions. However, the platform takes over many of the routine optimization tasks that would otherwise require constant adjustments.
Reddit Adds API Support for Max Campaigns
The expansion also brings Max campaigns to Reddit’s Advertising API. That means agencies and larger marketing teams can manage these campaigns through supported external platforms. Instead, they do not have to rely entirely on Reddit Ads Manager.
API support matters because many advertisers already operate through centralized campaign management systems. Large agencies may be running campaigns across Meta, Google, TikTok, Reddit and other networks at the same time. Having Reddit Max campaigns available through the API makes it easier to include them in those existing workflows.
It also removes some friction for advertisers that were interested in Reddit automation but did not want another standalone campaign process. The more easily Max campaigns fit into existing advertising infrastructure, the easier it becomes for brands to test the format. They can now do so without changing their entire media-buying setup.
Smartly Becomes Reddit’s First Max Campaign Integration
Reddit has also announced Smartly as the first third-party platform to support Max campaigns. Advertisers using Smartly can create and manage Reddit campaigns through the same system they may already use for other social advertising channels.
The partnership gives Reddit another route into larger advertising operations. Instead of asking agencies to shift their workflow directly into Reddit Ads Manager, the platform can meet advertisers inside tools they already know.
This is particularly useful for brands managing large volumes of creative and multiple campaigns at once. Smartly is built around campaign automation and creative management. Therefore, the integration gives Reddit’s Max format a more natural entry point for advertisers that already rely heavily on automated media buying.
Asset Groups Give Advertisers More Creative Control
Reddit is also introducing asset groups as part of the broader Max campaign rollout. The feature allows advertisers to organize different sets of creative assets inside the same campaign. Instead, they do not have to build separate campaigns for every product category, message or audience.
An advertiser could create one asset group around a particular product and another around a different offer. Each group can include its own images, headlines, media and destination URLs. Reddit can then optimize delivery across those assets while giving advertisers separate performance data for each group.
That gives marketers more room to test different creative directions without making the campaign structure unnecessarily complicated. It also makes it easier to understand whether a particular message, product category or visual approach is driving stronger results.
Reddit Says Max Campaigns Are Lowering Cost Per Action
Reddit is using results from earlier testing to support the wider rollout. According to the company, split tests showed that advertisers using Max campaigns achieved an average 17% lower cost per action. They also generated more than 27% additional conversions compared with standard campaign setups.
Those figures were based on 17 split tests carried out between June and August 2025. Reddit has also highlighted individual advertiser case studies to show how the format performed under different campaign strategies.
Fender used Max campaigns around Black Friday with a mix of banners, product imagery, artist content and video. Reddit said the campaign produced a 148% return on ad spend. In addition, click-through rate came in well above benchmark and cost per click improved compared with a standard campaign.
LensDirect also used Max campaigns as part of an ongoing advertising strategy. Reddit reported that the retailer generated a 5.5x overall return on ad spend by combining automated targeting, retargeting and rotating creative assets.
Those results come from Reddit’s own testing and case studies, so advertisers should treat them as examples rather than guaranteed outcomes. Performance will still depend on creative quality, campaign objectives, product demand, budget and audience fit.
Reddit Is Trying to Keep AI Advertising Transparent
One of the more interesting parts of Reddit’s pitch is its focus on reporting. Automated advertising often creates a trade-off. Marketers gain efficiency, but they sometimes lose visibility into why an algorithm made certain decisions.
Reddit is trying to reduce that problem through what it describes as open-box reporting. Max campaigns can provide advertisers with insights into top-performing audience personas, placements, devices, interests, communities and creative assets.
Advertisers can also examine combinations of headlines, imagery and formats that perform especially well. That gives marketers more context instead of simply showing the final conversion number.
The approach could help Reddit differentiate Max campaigns from highly automated systems that provide limited insight into how optimization actually happened. Advertisers increasingly accept AI-driven campaign management. Still, many want to understand where results are coming from before committing larger budgets.
Reddit’s Community Data Could Be Its Bigger Advantage
The AI behind Max campaigns is only part of the story. Reddit’s bigger strength may be the enormous volume of conversations happening inside highly specific communities.
People use Reddit to discuss products, hobbies, purchases, problems, recommendations and niche interests in considerable detail. Those conversations give the platform signals that are quite different from the data available on traditional social networks.
Reddit refers to the system built around those signals as Reddit Community Intelligence. The company uses activity and discussion patterns across communities to improve audience understanding, targeting and campaign optimization.
For advertisers, this means they do not necessarily need to understand every relevant subreddit before launching a campaign. Max campaigns can use Reddit’s own signals to identify communities and audiences that appear more likely to respond. Then, the format can adjust delivery based on performance.
That lowers the barrier for brands that see value in Reddit’s audience but have traditionally found the platform more complicated to navigate than other social advertising channels.
What Reddit Max Campaigns Mean for Social Media Advertisers
Reddit’s expansion fits into a much larger shift across digital advertising. Social platforms are steadily handing more campaign decisions to machine learning systems. These systems manage tasks from audience selection and bidding, to creative delivery and budget allocation.
Google and Meta have already pushed heavily in this direction. Meanwhile, TikTok and other platforms continue to expand their own automated advertising products. Reddit now wants to compete more directly for the same performance marketing budgets.
Its advantage is not simply automation. Reddit has a distinct type of audience data built around interest-driven conversations and communities. If Max campaigns can convert that information into reliable advertising performance, the platform may become more attractive to brands. This is especially true for those that previously treated Reddit as a secondary channel.
Making Max campaigns available to everyone removes one of the biggest obstacles to broader adoption. API support and the Smartly integration make the format easier to manage. At the same time, asset groups provide advertisers with more control over creative testing.
The next question is whether the strong results from Reddit’s early testing continue as more advertisers start using the system at scale. If they do, Max campaigns could become a much more important part of Reddit’s advertising business.
