WhatsApp is giving parents more ways to manage how their teenagers use the messaging app without giving them access to private conversations.
The company has introduced new WhatsApp parental controls covering group activity, privacy settings, Channels, Status updates and Meta AI. The controls are aimed at giving parents more visibility into how their teens use the platform while keeping personal messages and calls protected by end-to-end encryption.
The update comes as WhatsApp becomes more than a messaging service. Groups, Channels, Status and Meta AI now occupy a bigger part of the app, creating more areas where parents may want to set boundaries.
Parents Get More Visibility Into Teen Group Activity
Group chats are one of the biggest parts of the WhatsApp experience for younger users, but parents have historically had limited information about the groups their teenagers join. WhatsApp is now adding activity signals that give parents a better picture without exposing the actual conversations taking place inside those groups.
Parents can receive notifications when their teenager joins or leaves a WhatsApp group. They can also receive an alert when a group their teen belongs to experiences a significant increase in membership.
The feature does not allow parents to read messages inside those groups. Instead, it gives them information about changes in their teenager’s group activity.
WhatsApp is also adding privacy controls that allow parents to manage settings such as who can see their teen’s profile photo and who can add them to groups.
If a teenager attempts to change certain restrictions set by a parent, WhatsApp can require approval using a parent-set PIN.
WhatsApp Expands Parental Controls to Channels and Status
WhatsApp has gradually added more social features beyond one-to-one messaging, and its new parental controls now extend into those areas as well. Channels and Status can expose teenagers to a much broader range of content and contacts, making them another part of the platform that parents may want to manage.
Parents can control aspects of how their teenager uses Channels. They can also manage which Status updates their teen can see and determine who can view the teenager’s own Status updates.
That gives families more control over the public-facing and discovery elements of WhatsApp without turning the platform into a system where parents automatically see every private interaction.
Parents Can Manage Their Teen’s Meta AI Experience
Meta AI has become another important part of Meta’s consumer platforms, and WhatsApp is now bringing the AI assistant into its parental-control framework. For parents, this creates a separate issue from ordinary messaging because teenagers can use AI to ask questions, explore subjects and interact with generated content.
WhatsApp says parents can choose between the standard 13+ Meta AI experience and a stricter Limited Content option.
The company has also been developing broader parental controls around teen interactions with Meta AI across its services. Meta previously introduced tools allowing parents to see general topics their teens discussed with Meta AI during the previous seven days, without giving parents access to the actual conversations.
WhatsApp’s latest controls extend that approach to the messaging platform.
Private WhatsApp Messages Remain Protected
The new controls are designed around account settings and activity rather than giving parents access to private chats. That distinction is central to WhatsApp’s approach because the company continues to position end-to-end encryption as a core privacy feature.
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption when parental controls are active. Parents therefore do not receive a mechanism for simply opening their teenager’s private conversations.
Instead, the controls provide information about areas such as groups, privacy settings, Channels and Status while keeping the content of personal communications protected.
For families, that creates a different model of supervision: parents can establish boundaries without routinely reading everything their teenager sends or receives.
Parents Can Choose How Much Supervision to Use
Not every family wants the same level of oversight, particularly as teenagers get older. WhatsApp’s new system therefore gives parents control over which restrictions they want to apply rather than forcing every supervised account into one fixed setup.
The parental controls are optional, and parents can adjust or disable settings based on what they consider appropriate for their teenager.
WhatsApp has positioned the tools as something that can support conversations between parents and teens rather than replace them. The idea is to give parents practical controls while allowing families to decide how those controls should be used.
That flexibility also matters as teenagers become more independent and their parents gradually change the boundaries around their online activity.
WhatsApp Is Building a Broader Safety System for Younger Users
The latest controls are part of a wider effort by WhatsApp to introduce different protections for younger users. Earlier in 2026, the company introduced parent-managed accounts aimed at younger children, giving parents more control over contacts, groups and privacy settings.
Teen accounts require a different approach. A teenager may already use WhatsApp for school, friends, family and community groups, so completely restricting the service is not necessarily the model WhatsApp is pursuing.
Instead, the company is adding controls around the parts of the platform that have expanded beyond traditional messaging.
Groups, Channels, Status and Meta AI now sit alongside private conversations inside the same app. WhatsApp’s latest parental controls are designed to give parents a way to manage those different experiences while preserving the encryption protecting personal messages.
For WhatsApp, the challenge is finding a workable middle ground between teen independence, parental oversight and private communication.
These new controls are the company’s latest attempt to establish that balance.
