Christmas campaigns may still feel months away. In fact, when it comes to Pinterest holiday campaigns, Pinterest thinks brands are already running late.
The platform is urging advertisers to start their 2026 holiday marketing much earlier, arguing that Pinterest users begin searching, saving and comparing festive ideas well before the traditional November shopping rush.
Holiday activity on Pinterest can begin spiking as early as September. By the time many brands switch on their Christmas advertising, shoppers may have already decided what to buy, where to travel, what to cook or how they want their celebrations to look.
Pinterest Users Start Planning Before the Q4 Rush
Pinterest sits somewhere between a social platform, search engine and digital mood board. People often use it before making a purchase rather than after they have already chosen a product.
That difference matters during the holiday season.
Users are building gift lists, researching festive recipes, saving party ideas and comparing decorations months before Christmas. Pinterest says shopping is the leading reason people visit the platform, giving advertisers access to users who are actively considering what to purchase.
The company’s message to brands is fairly blunt: waiting until November means arriving after many decisions have already been made.
Early campaigns allow products to appear while users are still collecting ideas. A saved Pin in September can turn into a purchase weeks later, even when the original campaign did not generate an immediate sale.
Brands Are Being Told to Build the Basics First
Pinterest is not suggesting that brands throw a Christmas advert online tomorrow and leave it untouched.
The first step is less exciting, but probably more useful. Product catalogues, feeds, tracking tools and measurement systems need to be working before campaign spending increases.
Brands should check that product titles, prices, images and availability details are accurate. They should also decide which results actually matter, whether that means online sales, store visits, sign-ups, add-to-basket events or broader brand awareness.
Pinterest recommends installing its tracking tools and settling on clear campaign goals before the busiest part of the season begins. That gives advertisers cleaner data once more shoppers arrive.
A broken catalogue in October is annoying. Discovering it during Black Friday week is expensive.
Performance+ Will Handle More of the Campaign Work
Pinterest is also pushing advertisers towards Performance+, its AI-powered collection of campaign automation tools.
Performance+ can automate parts of bidding, targeting and campaign delivery. The system is designed to identify which products and creative combinations are performing, then direct more spending towards them without requiring constant manual changes.
Pinterest says updates to its advertising delivery models produced a 28% improvement in return on ad spend during tests involving small and medium-sized businesses using Performance+ campaigns with ROAS bidding. The result comes from Pinterest’s own testing, so advertisers will still need to judge performance against their own data.
Launching early gives the system more information to work with. It also gives marketers time to catch poor-performing creative before advertising costs climb later in the year.
Back-to-School and Halloween Can Become Testing Grounds
Not every early campaign needs to look like Christmas.
Pinterest suggests using earlier seasonal moments, including back-to-school shopping and Halloween, to test audiences, visuals, product groups and messaging.
That approach lets brands gather useful signals without betting the entire holiday budget on an untested campaign.
A retailer could test whether lifestyle photography performs better than clean product images. A food brand could compare recipe-led Pins with discount-focused creative. A travel company might learn whether users respond more strongly to winter escapes or family holiday packages.
By the time November arrives, advertisers should already know which ideas deserve more money.
That is the real argument behind launching early. It is not just about stretching a campaign across more weeks. It is about entering Q4 with something proven instead of experimenting during the most competitive part of the year.
Pinterest Wants Campaigns Live Between September and November
Pinterest advises marketers to launch their full holiday campaigns as early as possible during the September-to-November window.
Budgets and creative can then be scaled as festive interest rises.
This gives brands room to refresh weak adverts, build retargeting audiences and increase spending behind the products attracting genuine interest. It also keeps the brand visible across more of the customer journey, from initial inspiration to the final purchase.
Pinterest claims advertisers using a full-funnel strategy recorded an average incremental return on ad spend of 3.71 in a recent study. More than half of the incremental sales came from new buyers, according to the company.
The biggest December budget will not automatically win. A smaller campaign that has already spent two months learning what shoppers want may be in a much stronger position.
Holiday Shopping Does Not Stop on Christmas Day
Pinterest also wants advertisers to rethink when the festive season ends.
The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, sometimes called Q5 by marketers, remains an active shopping period. Users are looking for post-Christmas discounts, New Year outfits, party ideas, travel plans and products tied to fresh-start resolutions.
Pinterest reports that 55% of its weekly users continue buying online during this period, while 45% keep shopping in physical stores.
Brands pulling campaigns immediately after Christmas could miss that demand.
The creative may need to change, though. Gift messaging can be replaced with clearance deals, self-purchase ideas, New Year inspiration or products connected to fitness, organisation and personal goals.
Early Pinterest Campaigns Give Brands More Room to Adjust
Pinterest earns money from advertising, so its recommendation to run longer campaigns naturally benefits the platform.
Still, the practical argument holds up.
Starting earlier creates more time to test. It gives Pinterest’s advertising systems more campaign data and allows marketers to fix weak product feeds, targeting choices or creative assets before the expensive weeks arrive.
Holiday shoppers are not waiting for brands to declare that the season has started. They are already searching.
For advertisers relying on Pinterest holiday campaigns, September may no longer be early. It may simply be on time.
