TikTok Unveils AI-Powered Advertising and Shopping Tools at Advertising Week

TikTok AI advertising updates

TikTok is pushing artificial intelligence deeper into its advertising business. It is bringing AI into shopping, lead generation, campaign management and creative selection.

The company unveiled several new tools and updates at Advertising Week. This reflects a broader shift in how TikTok wants brands to advertise on and beyond its platform. The focus is no longer just on using AI to make videos or images. Now TikTok is putting AI into the machinery behind campaigns. This includes finding potential customers and deciding which creative assets should be used.

For advertisers, that could mean fewer manual steps. For TikTok, it means making its advertising ecosystem more automated and harder for marketers to leave.

TikTok Brings an AI Shopping Assistant to Product Discovery

TikTok is introducing an AI-powered Shopping Assistant to help users find products through more conversational searches. Instead of relying entirely on traditional keywords, shoppers can describe what they want. As a result, they receive product recommendations based on their needs.

The feature is designed to work with information from TikTok Shop sellers, including product details and availability. TikTok is also connecting the experience with Buy Direct. Therefore, shoppers can move from product discovery toward checkout within the platform.

That is an important development for TikTok Shop. It pushes the platform closer to becoming a place where users can search, compare and purchase products without leaving the app.

Agentic Commerce Moves Shopping Beyond Simple Recommendations

TikTok is also using the term agentic commerce to describe a broader approach to AI-powered shopping. The idea is that AI can do more than recommend a product. It can help interpret what a shopper actually wants and guide the user toward a purchase.

TikTok’s approach combines its AI Shopping Assistant with Buy Direct and its automated advertising infrastructure. The company is also expanding GMV Max, its automated TikTok Shop advertising solution. This gives sellers more tools to evaluate campaign performance and business costs.

For TikTok, this creates a tighter connection between entertainment, product discovery and transactions. A user can discover something in a video. In addition, they can ask about it, receive an AI-powered recommendation and potentially complete the purchase without breaking that journey.

TikTok Uses AI to Handle More Leads for Advertisers

TikTok is also introducing Agentic Leads, an AI-powered system designed to help businesses manage lead generation through automated conversations.

The tool can support interactions through direct messages and advertiser-owned websites. In turn, AI gathers information from potential customers and helps move them further into the sales process.

This is particularly relevant for businesses where the first customer interaction often involves basic questions, contact information or qualification steps. Instead of requiring a salesperson to handle every early-stage conversation manually, brands can use AI to deal with some of that initial workload.

TikTok is effectively turning its advertising tools into a more active sales layer. Instead of simply a system for delivering ads, it is evolving.

TikTok Expands Its Advertising Reach Beyond the App

TikTok is also expanding its TikTok Ad Network in the United States. This gives advertisers access to placements outside the main TikTok application.

The company says the network reaches almost 400,000 third-party and developer apps worldwide. That gives advertisers another way to extend campaigns beyond the familiar TikTok feed and reach audiences across additional digital environments.

The move is significant because TikTok is no longer treating its advertising opportunity as something limited to people scrolling through the app. Moreover, its advertising infrastructure can increasingly follow campaigns into other digital spaces.

For marketers, that means TikTok can become part of a broader media-buying strategy. Rather than functioning only as a social platform, it is expanding.

TikTok Opens Its Advertising System to External AI Tools

TikTok is also making its advertising infrastructure more accessible to external AI systems. It is using its TikTok Ads Model Context Protocol, or MCP.

The technology is intended to allow third-party AI applications to connect with TikTok’s advertising systems. That could let marketers use AI tools to interact with campaign functions such as creation, creative uploads and performance analysis.

The significance is less about one particular feature and more about where TikTok is heading. Marketers increasingly use several AI tools as part of their daily workflows. TikTok wants its advertising platform to work inside that environment.

Instead of forcing advertisers to perform every task manually inside TikTok’s own interface, the company is building ways for AI agents to interact with its advertising infrastructure.

Smart+ Pushes TikTok Advertising Further Toward Automation

TikTok is expanding its Smart+ advertising system with additional AI-powered automation. This covers areas such as search advertising, keywords and creative management.

Smart+ is part of TikTok’s wider effort to reduce the amount of manual campaign setup required from advertisers. The system can automate parts of targeting, optimisation and campaign management while allowing marketers to retain control over selected elements.

That approach reflects a bigger change in digital advertising. Platforms are increasingly asking advertisers to provide objectives, budget and creative ingredients. Their systems handle more of the optimisation.

TikTok is clearly moving in that direction.

Smart+ Creative Selection Organises AI and Creator Content

TikTok is also rolling out Smart+ Creative Selection, which brings different types of advertising assets into a single workflow.

Advertisers can work with their own images and videos alongside AI-generated content from TikTok Symphony and creator-sourced material. The system can recommend combinations of creative assets based on the advertiser’s business and campaign goals.

That solves a fairly ordinary problem that advertisers face every day: managing too many pieces of content.

Instead of keeping brand assets, AI-generated material and creator content in separate workflows, TikTok wants advertisers to bring them together. They should approve the material before it enters a campaign.

TikTok Is Turning AI Into the Infrastructure Behind Advertising

The latest announcements show that TikTok’s AI strategy is becoming much broader than automated content creation.

The company is applying AI to shopping, customer conversations, campaign optimisation, creative selection and advertising distribution. TikTok Symphony already provides AI-powered creative tools. Meanwhile, Smart+ and the newer agentic features push automation into campaign management and commerce.

That creates a different kind of TikTok advertising environment. Marketers may eventually spend less time manually building campaigns. They will spend more time setting objectives, reviewing AI recommendations and deciding where human judgement still matters.

TikTok is betting advertisers will be comfortable giving its AI systems more responsibility.

The bigger test will be whether those systems can deliver better business results. However, they must also avoid making campaigns feel less controlled or less distinctive.
