Snapchat Harry Potter AR experiences

Snapchat is leaning heavily into the Wizarding World with a new Harry Potter campaign built around augmented reality, Bitmoji fashion, chat customisation and real-world experiences.

The platform has partnered with HBO Max to promote the upcoming HBO Original series Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which is scheduled to debut at Christmas 2026. The campaign started on September 1, giving HBO several months to build interest before the series arrives.

Rather than limiting the promotion to a single branded Lens, Snapchat is spreading Harry Potter across different parts of the app. That includes camera effects, Bitmoji clothing, chat backgrounds, app icons and physical AR installations.

Snapchat Rolls Out 12 Harry Potter AR Lenses

Augmented reality is doing most of the heavy lifting in the campaign. Snapchat says 12 Harry Potter AR Lenses will roll out throughout the season, giving users different ways to interact with the story and share those moments with friends. The first experiences became available through the official Harry Potter Snapchat account on September 1.

Some of the Lenses tap into familiar pieces of the franchise rather than inventing something completely new. Fans can experience a Hogwarts letter, step aboard the Hogwarts Express and use a Sorting Hat Lens to show their Hogwarts House. That familiarity matters. Harry Potter already has a visual language people recognise instantly, so Snapchat does not have to spend much time explaining what the experiences are supposed to mean.

Bitmoji Fashion Gives Fans Their Own Hogwarts Look

Snapchat is also bringing the campaign into Bitmoji, where users will be able to dress their digital avatars in fashion inspired by the new HBO series. The wardrobe drops include recognisable costumes and other clothing connected to the Wizarding World.

This is probably one of the smarter parts of the promotion because Bitmoji clothing can remain visible beyond a single interaction. A Lens may only stay on screen for a few seconds, but an avatar dressed in Hogwarts-inspired fashion can appear repeatedly across chats and profiles. It turns the marketing into something fans can actually personalise instead of something they simply watch.

Harry Potter Chat Wallpapers Bring the Theme Into Conversations

Harry Potter-themed Chat Wallpapers are another part of the rollout. Snapchat users will be able to customise conversations with backgrounds inspired by the series, extending the campaign into one of the app’s most frequently used spaces. More of these wallpapers are expected to appear as the season progresses.

It is a fairly simple feature, but that is also why it works. HBO does not need every part of the campaign to be a big interactive spectacle. Putting Harry Potter imagery into everyday conversations keeps the franchise visible in a much less intrusive way.

Snap Mirrors Take Harry Potter AR Into the Real World

The campaign is not staying entirely inside the Snapchat app. Snap is also planning physical fan experiences in the United States and United Kingdom using its Snap Mirrors technology. Visitors will be able to virtually try on Wizarding World clothing and accessories based on their Hogwarts House.

This gives HBO and Snapchat another way to connect digital fandom with physical events. Someone can interact with the Harry Potter campaign at an event, create content around the experience and then carry that interaction back onto Snapchat. That crossover between real-world experiences and social sharing is becoming an increasingly useful part of entertainment marketing.

Snapchat Is Even Adding Harry Potter App Icons

Snapchat is taking the customisation one step further with Harry Potter-themed app icons. Fans can change the way the Snapchat icon appears on their device, putting a small piece of the campaign directly onto their home screen before they even open the platform.

It may sound minor next to augmented reality, but it fits the broader strategy. Snapchat and HBO are not relying on one promotional placement. They are putting Harry Potter into several different layers of the Snapchat experience, from the phone home screen to private conversations and camera effects.

HBO Max Is Starting the Harry Potter Promotion Months Early

The timing of the campaign is notable because the new Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone series will not arrive on HBO Max until Christmas 2026. Snapchat’s activations began on September 1, leaving a sizeable promotional window before the premiere.

Social Media Today suggested that the early launch could help HBO steadily build interest rather than relying on a shorter campaign immediately before release. There is also an obvious seasonal opportunity around Halloween, when costumes and fantasy-themed content naturally receive more attention across social platforms.

Starting this early gives HBO room to introduce new activations over several months. Instead of one large push, the company can keep adding new reasons for fans to engage with the franchise.

Harry Potter Shows Why AR Works Well for Entertainment Marketing

The wider takeaway is not really about wizard robes or Snapchat wallpapers. It is about how entertainment companies are using social platforms to make upcoming releases interactive long before viewers sit down to watch them.

Traditional advertising asks people to watch a trailer or look at an image. Snapchat’s approach lets fans put themselves inside the campaign. They can try on clothing virtually, represent a Hogwarts House, customise their Bitmoji or share a branded Lens with friends.

That is particularly useful for a franchise such as Harry Potter because the fictional world already has objects, locations, symbols and identities that people want to interact with. Snapchat simply gives those elements another digital home.

Snapchat Continues to Make AR a Core Part of Its Platform

For Snapchat, the Harry Potter partnership also reinforces its long-running focus on augmented reality. Rather than treating AR as an occasional novelty, Snap continues to build campaigns around interactive experiences that sit directly inside social behaviour.

The Harry Potter promotion gives the company a highly recognisable franchise to demonstrate that strategy. The 12 AR Lenses are the biggest part of the rollout, but the addition of Snap Mirrors, Bitmoji fashion and other customisation features makes the campaign feel broader than a standard sponsored Lens.

There is a marketing argument in there too. The more places a campaign can naturally appear within a platform, the less dependent it becomes on conventional advertising placements.

Snapchat and HBO Are Building a Longer Harry Potter Campaign

More Harry Potter features are expected to arrive as the season continues, so the September launch looks more like the beginning of the campaign than the finished product. Snapchat confirmed that additional Bitmoji fashion drops, Chat Wallpapers and other experiences will roll out over time.

That could keep the upcoming HBO series circulating on social media well before its Christmas premiere. For a franchise with an established fan base and a new generation of viewers to reach, that longer runway may prove more useful than one enormous launch-week promotion.

Snapchat gets a major entertainment property for its AR ecosystem. HBO gets months of interactive promotion. Harry Potter fans get to play with Hogwarts before the first episode even streams.
