WhatsApp is testing a small feature that could change how people start conversations inside the app: green dot status indicators.
The new indicator appears on a contact’s profile image when that person is online, giving users a quicker visual signal that someone is active. It is a tiny design change, sure. But on a messaging app used for private chats, work updates, family groups, customer replies, and everything in between, tiny changes can feel bigger than they look.
According to Social Media Today, the feature is being tested on WhatsApp’s latest iOS version, with related code also added to a recent Android release. The update replaces the older text-based online label with a more direct green dot marker.
WhatsApp Makes Online Status Easier to Spot
Before this change, WhatsApp users could see whether someone was online through a text label under the contact’s photo. The green dot makes that signal more obvious. Less reading. More instant recognition.
WA Beta Info reported that the indicator currently appears only inside the chat info screen. That means it is not yet showing in the main chat list or directly inside active conversations. So, for now, WhatsApp seems to be testing the feature in a limited way rather than placing online signals everywhere at once.
That feels intentional. A green dot in every chat list could get noisy fast. It could also make people feel watched, especially on an app where privacy expectations are high.
A Small Feature With a Real-Time Messaging Push
The main purpose is easy to understand. If users can see that someone is online, they may be more likely to start a conversation right away.
That could help WhatsApp increase real-time engagement. A quick message becomes easier when the app quietly tells you, “they’re here now.” For friends, teams, businesses, and support chats, that kind of signal can be useful.
But it is not all upside.
Some people open WhatsApp without wanting to talk. They check one message. They read a group chat. They look for a file. Being shown as available, even through something as small as a green dot, can create pressure to respond.
Privacy Will Be the Bigger Question
WhatsApp has built much of its identity around private messaging, so any feature that makes user activity more visible needs careful handling.
Social Media Today noted that WhatsApp will likely include a way to switch the indicator off for users who do not want it. That would make sense. Online visibility is useful only when people feel they still control it.
The company already gives users controls around privacy settings, including last seen and online status visibility. A green dot indicator would need to fit into that same privacy logic, otherwise it may annoy the exact users it is meant to help.
Why This Matters for WhatsApp
This is not a massive product launch. It is not a redesign. It is not a new AI tool or monetization feature.
Still, it says something about where WhatsApp is heading. The app wants conversations to feel more immediate. More alive. More like someone is actually there on the other side.
The green dot could make WhatsApp feel closer to social platforms and workplace messaging apps, where live presence indicators are already normal. The difference is that WhatsApp sits in a more personal space. That makes the feature useful, but also a little sensitive.
For now, the WhatsApp green dot status indicator is still limited. If it rolls out more widely, the real test will be whether users see it as helpful or just another reason to feel pressured to reply.
